June 2008 Wine of the
Month

The
oldest producing vineyard in Monterey County, Chalone Vineyard rests on
the Gavilan Mountain Range on the north slope of Chalone Peak. The vineyard's
name comes from the peak, which derives its name from the indigenous Costanoan
Native American tribe, the Chalone, or Chollen.
Chalone Monterey Chardonnay has bright pear, apple, citrus and stone
fruit character. Hints of floral and spice highlight the aromas and echo on
the palate. The perfectly balanced flavors mingle crisp, natural acidity with
a rich, creamy texture from sur lie aging. Enjoy with scallops and angel hair
pasta tossed with a cream sauce.
Chalone Vineyards Merlot is rich and soft; full of flavor and very
approachable. Fresh, spicy aromas of berry and clove are followed by luscious
flavors of dark cherry, accentuated by the soft vanilla character of the oak.
It is full-bodied with nicely balanced acidity, a velvety mouth feel, and
medium-long finish. It is delicious with lamb chops, game birds, and wild
mushroom risotto.
Chalone Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied with aromas of
